Reflected Glory

I have seen the beauty of the Lord our God in ordinary people! Sometimes it seemed to hover over a little child, singing for very joy, but sometimes I have found it on the face of a strong man battling with his sorrow, or defying a terrible temptation.

In Robert Woodrow’s (1679 – 1734) excellent work Analecta there is an account of a merchant who went to Scotland on business. During his visit he heard three preachers. (It was a more leisured and, perhaps, a saner world 300 years ago!) He recorded his impressions carefully. Of Robert Blair he said; “That man showed me the majesty of God.” Of Samuel Rutherford; “That man showed me the loveliness of Christ.” Coming to Irvine he heard a sermon by old David Dickson; “That man,” he said, “showed me all my heart.” “Let the majesty of God and loveliness of Christ be in my heart.” Dare I begin this day with such a prayer, knowing what manner of man I am? I dare, but only because I know what manner of love God has bestowed upon me.

John.
